Glutathione isn’t a word that comes up easily in conversations. In fact, very few people know of its presence in their bodies or the role it plays in maintaining their overall health.
So if you are not familiar with what Glutathione is or what it does, you are certainly not alone.
What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is an antioxidant made from the combination of three amino acids; glycine, glutamate, and cysteine. It is mostly present in your cells and it helps to rid the body of unwanted/dangerous substances such as free radicals, toxins, and chemicals.
However, your body’s supply of glutathione tends to decrease as you get older. This is most times due to the fact that the body can no longer produce it. Unfortunately, poor health seems to go hand in hand with lower glutathione levels in the body.
For example, lower levels of the anti-oxidant may play a vital role in the development of conditions that are associated with old age. Also, low glutathione level in the body is also associated with ailments such as cancer, heart disease, dementia, autism, arthritis, liver disease and many more.
This is why some people go ahead to take glutathione supplements to make up for its shortage in their body. Others take it for other reasons such as:
– Its improved anti-oxidant power
– Its detoxifying properties
– Protection against the harmful effects of chemotherapy and other forms of radiation exposure.
Is Glutathione Supplement Safe?
While these reasons for taking glutathione supplement seem to make sense, a big question remains unanswered. Is glutathione supplement safe?
To answer this question effectively, I will highlight the side effects of continuous ingestion of the supplement. This way you will be able to determine for yourself whether glutathione supplement is safe for you or not.
Side-Effects of Taking Glutathione
Reduced Zinc Levels
While taking glutathione supplements may deliver some health benefits, its prolong usage has been associated with lower zinc levels in the body. A condition that can trigger other health complications.
People with asthma may experience an increased number of asthma attacks during the period of prolonged glutathione usage. Common symptoms of these attacks include a severe cough and wheezing.
Increased Skin Sensitivity
Persistent intake of oral glutathione inhibits the synthesis of melanin (the pigment responsible for our skin and hair color), making the skin appear lighter than it should be. While this may be a desirable effect of glutathione usage in the treatment of pigmentation disorders and other skin conditions, it serves as a risk of increased sun sensitivity. Besides being responsible for our skin and hair color, melanin also protects our skin from the direct harsh impact of the sun.
Currently, experts are still unsure whether glutathione usage is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Glutathione has both positive and negative side effects. As a result, it is probably wrong to outrightly say that taking glutathione supplements isn’t safe. However, you should avoid using it if you are sensitive to some of the effects that it exerts. Asthma attack triggered by the use of glutathione supplements may result in life-threatening situations that could have been easily avoided.
